The quiet months are predictable

Slow seasons do not arrive from nowhere. They arrive on roughly the same schedule every year, which means they can be planned for.

Every trade has months where the phone goes quiet. Ask around and people will tell you it is just how it goes — the weather, the school holidays, people saving up after Christmas.

All of that is true. What is odd is how many firms treat it as a surprise.

The short version
The job	Look up which weeks were slow last year, and the year before.
The finding	The same weeks, most years. Your own calendar already shows them.
The fault	What fills a quiet March has to be built in January, and in January you are busy.
The fix	Start it while the schedule is still full. A quiet month you saw coming is just a lighter month.

It happens at the same time every year

Look back over your own calendar for the last two or three years. Not your feelings about it, the actual bookings. Most people find the slow stretches land in roughly the same weeks each time.

Which means the quiet is not random. It is seasonal, it is repeated, and it is visible in your own records before it happens.

Because the work that fixes a quiet March has to be done in January, and in January you are busy.

What planning for it actually looks like

Nothing dramatic. Mostly it is deciding, while you are busy, to spend a small and boring amount of time on the thing that pays off later:

Know which weeks were slow last year, and the year before, and where the work that did come in actually came from.
Work backwards from them. Whatever is meant to fill those weeks needs to be running well before.
Keep hold of your past customers. The cheapest job you will ever win is the second one from somebody who already trusts you.
Have one route into the business that belongs to you, so the quiet weeks have something to push against.

The point

A slow season you did not see coming is a cashflow problem. A slow season you planned for in advance is just a lighter month — a good time for the certification you keep putting off, the van that needs work, or a week away while nobody is trying to book you anyway.

The difference between the two is not luck. It is whether you looked at last year’s calendar before this year’s quiet arrived.
