Questions
Why do I have to click a link in an email?
Because it is the only way to know the address is real and belongs to you. It also means the link keeps working: open it on the van phone, open it again on the laptop at home, for the next thirty days.
Why is my true rate higher than what I charge?
Because the hours you can invoice are far fewer than the hours you work, and your costs come out of those billable hours only.
Is this figure before or after tax?
Take-home here means what the business pays you before personal tax. Talk to your accountant about the rest.
Is the calculator itself free?
Yes, and it stays that way. There is nothing to pay and no account to make. What it asks for is an email address: answer the five questions, we send a link, and opening that link fills in your rate, the yearly gap and all four charts, on this page, with the numbers you typed. One link, good for thirty days, and it works on more than one device.
Do you store my numbers?
No. Every figure on this page is worked out on your phone, in your browser, and nothing is sent on its own. Two things leave only when you ask them to: the email address that opens the breakdown, and — if you press “email this to me” — the figures themselves, because the write-up has to be written from something.
